Silica soil, silica sand, silica rock. It is quartz. Nothing special. Pretty close to inert. The silica soil can have some CEC issues, but not the sand or therocks. Silca rounded rocks are easy on the roots as there are no sharp edges. They are avilable at about all pet stores as aquarium substrate.
Diatomite protects against rot, and can slowly release silica to orchids. Enhances Bloom of Orchids Diatomite Rock is a naturally mined mineral composed entirely of the skeletal remains of trillions of microscopic, unicellular plankton called diatoms.
All work well as a hydroponic growth media. Silica Stone / Diahydro stays a little more moist than Diatomite so it requires fewer watering cycles – this is because it has a larger percentage of silica (94%+ compared to 84% for Diatomite), hence the pure white color and the greater absorbency due to increased porosity.
Diatomite contains silica, which is absorbed into plant tissue and helps improve plant structure and resistance to pests / diseases Usage notes : Prewash, as sediment may clog drippers. Many growers mix it with hydroton; this makes for improved air / water ratio.

High Silica Content - In nature, Silica is conducive to healthy plant and root development. Because Diatomite is 86% silica, your plants will receive a continual slow release of silica, assisting with the growth of healthier, more robust plants. Absorbency & Porosity - Diatomite is naturally very porous, and can hold 150% of its weight in water.
Moreover, diatomite is also used in agricultural applications such as hydroponics, nutrient marker in livestock and other specialty applications. However, health regulations associated with diatomite are anticipated to slower the growth of the market in next few years.
Passive hydroponics setup expand with air Netted pot and coconut coir Hydroponic nutrient Types of Growing Media for Experiment Rockwool (stone wool)-formed by melting rock at 1600 C and subjecting to a stream of air or spinning (much like cotton candy) to form long thin fibers. Warning it is harmful to breathe the dust of this product.
The water retention is the next step, and rocks are an easy fix for that. I prefer to use diatomaceous earth, a porous, silica-rich stone that retains water and helps drain it too.My mix also contains another water retention aid: coco coir.
